About Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church
--------------------------------------------------------------

Ethiopia, the land of Judeo-Christianity, is one of the most ancient predominantly Christian countries of the world. It is marked with a fascinating history, unique civilization, culture and religious life. The Book of Genesis recounts: “And the name of the second river is Ghion: the same is it that compasses the whole land of Ethiopia” (Geneses 2:13). The Psalmist David also says: “Let Ethiopia hasten to stretch out her hands to God” (Psalms 68:31).

The purpose of this website is to spread the Gospel to the world as accepted by the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Tradition.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is the first Church in the world who accepted Christianity as state religion in 330 ACE, and also the only black African nation who accept and defend the Christian religion without the influence of the colonial power.

Since its inception the Church has contributed a tremendous amount of moral, social, cultural, educational, artistical, architectural values to the nation. It became also the major force to defend and keep the unity and freedom of the people from the outside invaders, who have tirelessly attack the country for more than 1500 years. Muslim invaders (sponsored by Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and others), Colonial invaders (Portuguese’s and Italian’s.) At all time the Church was for front to defend the religion and the freedom of the nation. For these reason the Church was the first target to be weakened and destroyed by these invaders. Still the struggles continue with the inside and outside enemies.

The Church served the nation as ministry of education until recently. It gave the Ge`ez and Amharic languages with the alphabets, it produces lots of scholars in theology, literature, painting, architecture, fine arts and music, etc.

At present the Church is spreading the word of God not only in Ethiopia but also throughout the world. The Church in the Diaspora is the moral, social, cultural, and educational centre for the Ethiopians and other nationalities that follow the teaching of the Church.
